【匚】Hako-gamae, Kakushi-gamae
Commentary on the radical "匚, 匸"
The radicals "匚" and "匸" are originally different radicals.
But since today's kanji do not distinguish between them, they are treated as a single radical.
The radical "匚" is a rectangular or square box shape.
It means a box.
The radical "匸" represents the path and lid of the slope. And it represents a place where things can be put away.
It means to hide.
e.g.
区(區) → 匚 + 品
The kanji "區" is the old form of kanji "区".
The part of "匚" indicates that it is enclosed in a separator.
The part of "品" means many objects.
The two together express the meaning of compartmentalizing objects/things.
匠 → 匚 + 斤
The part of "匚" represents a measure.
The part of "斤" represents an axe.
Together, the two mean a technician who uses a ruler or an axe.
