【方】hō-hen, kata-hen
Commentary on the radical "方"
"方 (hō-hen, kata-hen)" is related to flags, battle flags.
This is an image of a flag fluttering in the wind.
The left half of an ancient Kanji "方人" part of "方" is left.
e.g.
旅 → 方人 + 人人
The part of "方人" means "battle flags".
The part of "人人" means "people".
The two together represent "many people going with military flags," from which the meaning of "journey" was derived.
旋 → 方人+ 疋
The part of "方人" means "flags (windsock, windcone)".
The part of "疋" is the shape of "foot".
The two together came to represent the meaning of "walking around in circles," as if a windcone (windsock) is going around.
