Commentary on the radical "艹"
Many Kanji with "艹" as a radical are related to the various names for grass, the state of the grass, or what is made from the grass.
e.g.
芝 → 艹+ 之
The part of "艹" represents grass.
The part of "之" represents the shape of a foot.
The two together represent the reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), which grows like a foot sticking out of the ground.
In Japan, it means turf.
芳 → 艹 + 方
The part of "艹" represents grass and flowers.
The part of "方" means spreading to the left and right.
The two together mean that the fragrance of grass and flowers spreads.
