Commentary on the radical "虫"
Many kanji with the radical "虫" are related to the names of various animals, such as a type of shellfish, frogs, snakes, etc., as well as insects and other small animals, and their states of being.
e.g.
蛇 → 虫 + 它
The part of "它" is an image of "a snake".
Later, the part of "虫" was added to clarify the meaning.
蛮 → 變 + 虫
The part of "變" means "unusual, different, out of the ordinary".
Together, the two represent "a race with customs different from those of the Han Chinese" in ancient times.
In other words, it means "a different race".
