My profile

Hi, I’m Suki.
I am a native Japanese.

When I was in elementary school, I was given a book of kanji. The book was very easy to understand, with illustrations and information on the stroke order, origins, meanings, words, etc. I remember having fun memorizing kanji by looking at the illustrations.

As the months went by and I grew up, I had a chance to talk with a returnee at work. She was very smart and got all A's in her school years. He had moved to the U.S. when he was a child and had lived there all his life, so his mother tongue was English, but his parents were Japanese and he could speak Japanese as well. However, I was not good at writing or reading kanji. So I lent him a kanji dictionary that I had used when I was a student, but it didn't help him at all because he couldn't read what was written.

I thought it would be a shame not to take advantage of the kanji dictionary because it helped me understand kanji easily, quickly, and increased my vocabulary.

I still have the opportunity to teach Japanese, and I was reminded of my impression that many people are not good at Kanji. Compared to Western languages, there are more characters and their shapes are more complex, almost like symbols. That's why it's hard to remember them.

I looked at several other sites, but I felt that very few of them addressed the essence of learning kanji, so I started this site.

On this site, I will explain kanji in an easy-to-understand and remember way, based on my experience. Please use it as a game strategy book.
Even if you can't read a kanji dictionary written in Japanese, you can understand what's in the dictionary by looking at this site. You can also learn useful words that you can use in your daily life.

Let's conquer the kanji that have become a barrier to learning Japanese and achieving Japanese language mastery.
I would be happy if I could be of any help to you.

How to use this site

That's why I don't teach grammar. It's also because there are so many other sites and services out there.

Although the kanji are listed according to JLPT level, the words and example sentences introduced are those that are often used in daily life, as well as those at an advanced level, so there may be some kanji you cannot read or words you do not know yet.
You may find that you can't read some of the kanji or words you don't know yet, so please skip those and continue reading.
Then, when you can understand them later on, please go back to those pages and understand the contents.

I'll be updating this page as we go along, so please look forward to it.
