【日】【曰】Hi-hen, Hirabi

Commentary on the radical "日" or "曰"

Although the part of "日 (Hi-hen, Nichi)" and "曰 (Hirabi, Iwaku)" are originally two different radicals, they are so similar in shape that it is difficult to distinguish them, so they are explained together for convenience.

Kanji characters with the "日 (Hi-hen, Nichi)" radical are associated with the sun, light and dark, and time.

The "曰 (Hirabi, Iwaku)" radical was created for convenience in order to group together characters with forms other than "日 (Hi-hen, Nichi)".

e.g.

早 → 日 + 甲

The part of "日" means the sun.
The part of "甲" represents the human head.
The meaning of "the morning when the sun begins to rise over people's heads" has been turned around to mean "early."
In modern characters, the part of "甲" has been simplified to "十".

時 → 日+ 寺

The part of "日" represents the day.
The part of "寺" is related to the sound "shi," which means "to go".
From there, it came to mean "advancing day. In other words, it came to represent "time".
