【革】Kawa-hen
Commentary on the radical "革"
Many kanji with the radical "革" represent various types of leather products.
e.g.
鞠 → 革 + 菊
The part of "菊" means "to scoop up with both hands".
The two together represent "a ball made of leather spherical enough to be scooped up with both hands".
鞍 → 革 + 安
The part of "安" means "to stabilize".
The two together represent "a leather harness placed on the back of a horse or other animal to stabilize the rider".
In other words, it means "saddle".
