Commentary on the radical "寸"
The character "寸" is a variation of the character "又" for a right hand.
It represents "hand".
e.g.
寺 → 土＋ 寸
The part of "寸" stands for "hand".
The part of "山" is associated with the kanji character "止." The kanji character "止" represents the meaning of "to stay."
Originally, it represented "a place where officials stay, a government office."
However, after the arrival of Buddhism, it came to represent the meaning of "temple."
耐 → 而 ＋ 寸
The part of "寸" stands for "elbow".
The part of "而" is the hieroglyphic character for "beard, facial hair."
It means "soft like a beard."
The two together mean "to soften the elbow and hold it up."
Generally, it means "to endure."
